Butcher Harry is a '¨Porkemon master

Opportunistic teenager Harry Gigli, of St Annes butchers shop Gigli’s Pies, cashed in on the recent Pokemon Go craze with a rather unique creation.

The 16-year-old apprentice created his very first pie with the family business in the shape of the popular Nintendo game’s signature ‘pokeball’.

The pork and mango ‘Porkemon’ pies went on sale on Friday for a limited time only.

Harry said: “I have been playing the game and since we sell a lot of pork pies as it is we joked about whether we could come up with a Pokemon-themed pie.

“We wanted it to be something recognisable.

“We have got quite a big following on social media so we wanted to do something that could get people talking and have a laugh about.”

“We have been busy in the shop with them. They don’t look like any other pie we do so they really stand out at the counter.

“I only started here a few weeks ago so this is the first thing of mine to go on the counter, but I’m always thinking of more.

“In the past my dad has always been the innovative one and I’m hoping to follow in his footsteps and take that over in the business.

The Pokemon Go app is the latest gaming craze which sees people hunting for the cute monsters in the real world using their mobile phones.

Joe Gigli, Harry’s older brother and manager at Gigli’s Pies, added that novelty pies such as Harry’s Porkemon special helped to bring in customers to a struggling traditional industry.

He said: “We have done special pies in the past, like when Blackpool got promoted to the Premier League we did a tangerine-flavoured pie.

“We’re always trying to think of new things.

“You can’t just stick with the meat any more, you’ve got to do something special.

“Harry’s pies have gone down really well with our customers and have completely sold out.

“It’s a bit of a different flavour with the mango, and it gets people talking.

“The older generation don’t really know what Pokemon is so it gets them chatting.”
