A Blackpool health care group has won a national award
Baxter Life Care have been running for just over a year having been given a leg up by Blackpool Council’s Get Started service.
The Bispham-based company, run by husband and wife duo Bev and Dean Baxter, already employ 32 people, including four ex-service personnel, and are going from strength-to-strength.
And the company has done so well that they were invited to London as finalists in the ERSA Employability Awards and came away with the SME Employer of the Year Award.
The nominations centres around their successful health and social care training course, The Care Academy.
Bev said: “We did not expect to be nominated and make the final three in the prestigious SME Employer of the Year Award which recognises exceptional commitment in creating opportunities for disadvantaged and long term unemployed jobseekers. Providing health and social care services to individuals and organisations across Lancashire is what we are about but our ethos is more than that; it is central to the way we recruit and develop our staff.
“Regardless of whether they take up a position with our company, once they have completed the Care Academy course, they will have a recognised qualification that will improve their employability as well as boost confidence and self-esteem.”
And Coun Mark Smith, Blackpool Council’s cabinet member for business and economic development, said: “It’s extremely pleasing to see Get Started businesses creating jobs in the area and I congratulate Bev and Dean over the award. Creating jobs and trying to grow the economy by supporting SMEs is what Get Started is all about.”
Get Started, begun with help from the European Regional Development Fund, helps new business with everything from advice on how to set up to marketing, accounting and mentoring.
