A SCHEME which could enable Blackpool’s tramway to expand has been given the go-ahead.

At a meeting of the resort’s full council this week, members voted unanimously in favour of approving the major transport funding scheme – which will give the town more say on future transport projects, including the proposed extension of the tramway onto Talbot Road from North Pier to Blackpool North railway station.

Coun Paul Galley has welcomed the scheme, which will see Blackpool Council join forces with Blackburn with Darwen Council and Lancashire County Council to take more control of their own transport spending than is presently allowed by central Government.

Coun Galley said: “This is a scheme that’s going to be huge for the town.

“The benefits would be massive for Fleetwood too because it doesn’t have a railway station, so it would mean connecting people there to the railway.

“It will be really important.”
