Shoppers in Poulton are set to get a new discount supermarket, on the site of the former Booths store.

Aldi is to take over the Ball Street premises when Booths completes its move as part of the £20m redevelopment of the Teanlowe Centre in the town.

The new 35,200 sq ft Booths is set to open in November following extensive building work and reshaping of the centre.

The work, being carried out by Eric Wright Construction, has resulted in the closure of the Co-op and WH Smith stores in the town but the new Aldi will go some way to return retail jobs to the area.

A spokesman for Booths said: “Food and wine retailer Booths has agreed to lease land on Ball Street to Aldi, who will open a new store in 2016, as Booths prepares to open a state-of-the-art replacement store in the newly revamped Teanlowe Centre in Poulton.

“As part of its preparation for planning permission, Aldi has started carrying out surveys on the Ball Street site, which will be used to inform a proposal that will include a brand new Aldi food store and on site customer parking.”

Coun Peter Murphy, cabinet member with responsibility for economic development at Wyre Council, said: “The news that Aldi is coming to Poulton is fantastic for residents of the town and surrounding areas.

“With the brand new Booths due to open and the newly revamped Teanlowe Centre, we’re attracting national brands alongside our independent retailers and providing a fantastic shopping offer.”
