A major Thornton employer is hoping to create new jobs in the area over the next three years.

Victrex, which emerged out the ICI buy-out, held an event yesterday to celebrate 20 years in business.

The global plastics firm has seen its value rocket from £25m back in 1993 to £1.3bm now, a 5,000 per cent increase.

In that time the number of employees at the Thornton site has risen from around 60 to more than 650.

Chief executive David Hummel said he hopes to continue that growth and create even more jobs on the Fylde coast.

He said: “We don’t want to give people jobs – we want them to have careers.”

The company is investing in encouraging the next generation by encouraging school children to consider careers in science and technology.

As part of almost £100m of investment in the site over the next few years, Victrex aims to take on a small number of extra staff locally.

And it says it is looking at new market opportunities that could see the company double in size within a decade.

Mr Hummel added: “I think we really can see growth here. That is really important to us.”

Long-term employee Tony Whitehead, of Poulton, said: “I have worked here for 15 years. It has been amazing to be part of this growth.”
