Tourism chiefs were celebrating today after Blackpool enjoyed one of its best October half-terms on record.

More than 150,000 extra people flooded on to the Prom this year compared to 2014, new figures show.

Tram passengernumbers rocketed too after extra services were put on to prevent overcrowding, which sparked scores of complaints last year. The figures are a welcome shot-in-the-arm for attractions and hoteliers after a “disappointing” start to the 2015 season.

Coun Gillian Campbell, deputy leader of Blackpool Council, said: “This year’s October half term has been astonishing.

“It is hard to imagine any other resort destination in the UK that is capable of attracting such an incredible number of visitors outside of the summer months.
