A Blackpool couple are gearing up for success after transforming a family hobby into a new business.

Andy and Michelle Lucas have come up with an unusual concept in car repairs and maintenance.

Andy, a mechanic for more than 17 years, and his son took on a new project, to build a kit car.

He said the process was a great journey, where together they had fun and learnt new skills, and ended up with a cool car.

The experience encouraged the Lucas family to want to share their skills with other families like themselves, who do not have the space or support to take on the challenge.

And so U-Repair was born, a bespoke car repair service that offers people storage space and help with their repairs or motor projects.

The Moor Park Avenue garage welcomes novices to experts to hire ramps, use the in-house toolkits, join up to a course or take out a package of support to complete a kit car or other rebuild challenge.

Blackpool Council’s Get Started service, part of the Start Up Lancashire service supported by the European Regional Development Fund, regularly comes across budding entrepreneurs who aspire to turn a hobby into a new business.

With specialist one-to-one support available, as well as a range of free courses on all aspects of business, their advisors can normally show people that there is usually a solution.

Andy Lucas, delighted with his new venture, said: “We have facilities, equipment and expert support, all available to hire at very reasonable rates.

“We welcome all car and motorbike enthusiasts, professionals, retired mechanics and mobile mechanics to get in touch if they need some ramp time or practical support.

“In the future we would love to run clubs for young people to support teams restoring cars or similar. The kit car project was just for fun but the end result is so much more.

“We’ve got a car and immense feeling of achievement and pride.”

Coun Fred Jackson, Blackpool Council’s cabinet member for urban regeneration, said: “We wish the Lucas family the very best of luck with their business and are so pleased that they have benefited from the Get Started service.”

Get Started has helped more than 1,000 people start their own businesses over the last seven years.
