Poulton looks set to be left without a WH Smith after it was revealed that the store in the Teanlowe Centre is set to close.

The shop will shut next month as part of the redesign of the centre.

But bosses at the national stationer said they have not identified an alternative site for the store and that jobs will be lost in the town.

It is the second jobs blow caused by the revamp. In March the Co-op confirmed that its store would be closing in June there with the loss of around 30 jobs.

Staff were being offered alternative employment within the company.

The centre is undergoing a £20m redevelopment to improve the centre and create a new 35,200 sq Booths store.

The project involves the demolition of the western part of the existing Teanlowe Centre, where the Co-op and WH Smith are located, to make way for the new store. Repairs and improvements will be made to the remainder of the centre comprising the eastern mall, which leads out to Market Place and smaller stores have been relocated.

The Teanlowe car park will be a free short stay park for shoppers, and a new link road through Hardhorn Road car park is also included as part of the project.

It is due to be completed and open before the new supermarket is ready in 2016.

Today a spokesman for WH Smith said: “We can confirm that the WH Smith store in Poulton-le-Fylde will close in September due to the redevelopment of the shopping centre.

“We are disappointed to lose our presence in the town, however we will continue to look for another suitable location.”

A spokesman for Booths said : “WH Smith will be closing early September to make way for the demolition of the southern section of the Teanlowe Centre prior to commencement of works to the new Booths store.

“Other shops in the recently refurbished eastern mall will be unaffected.”
