FORGET Independence Day – July 4 has been renamed Independents Day in the UK.
Shopkeepers are urging members of the public to buy at least one item from a local, independent shop to help keep the high street alive.
Skillsmart Retail and the National Skills Academy for Retail have teamed up with independent retailers and trade associations around the country to encourage the public to celebrate diversity on the high street and support local retailers on July 4.
Lytham Enterprise Group is encouraging businesses to support Independents Day by placing a ‘Your high street needs you!’ poster in their shop windows.
Natalie Peters, owner of Amabo Boutique in Clifton Street, said: “Lytham has such a wonderful selection of independent businesses that can offer customers choice, diversity and a personal customer service that is not found on the high street.
“The shop local message is an important one for the local businesses and community alike, it is essential that we are all passionate about keeping Lytham as a vibrant shopping experience.”
Anne Seaman, chief executive of Skillsmart Retail added: “We are delighted to lead this campaign and support small retailers.
“Raising awareness in the public is one of the biggest challenges smaller retailers face and our message is about encouraging the public to understand how important a diverse retail sector is.” Retailers can download the poster from www.skillsmartretail.com/IndependentsDay.
