Blackpool and Lytham have joined the superfast phone revolution as 4G mobile services have launched in the area.
The launch, by mobile phones giant EE, has been welcomed as a boost for business in the area. The Fylde coast is in the second tranche of areas to get the 4G mobile service which is up to five times faster than 3G and allows better transfer of larger documents and better TV and games play.
Olaf Swantee, chief executive of EE, which runs the Orange and T-Mobile, said: “Our 4G rollout is ensuring that we’re connecting people right across the UK to one of the fastest mobile networks in the world, as quickly as possible.
“Consumers and businesses in the UK use mobile internet more than any other market, and we’re working to meet that demand right across the country.”
And EE is to double the speed on its 4G network in ten cities this summer.
Coun Simon Blackburn, leader of Blackpool Council, said: “The arrival of 4G mobile services in Blackpool is a great benefit for local business, residents and also the thousands of tourists who visit Blackpool in the summer months.
“The arrival of the latest generation of mobile technology supports the Council’s aims for investments that make Blackpool more attractive to live, to work and visit.
“We’re delighted that 4G is here so soon since the launch late last year, making Blackpool one of the best connected towns in the UK.
