A leading Fylde yachtsman is set to quit the coast after a row over port services.

Andy Dobson, who runs Atlas Sailing, is to sail away taking his International Yacht Training scheme with him.

He said his decision came after months of frustration with the owners of Fleetwood marina over services such as the boat hoist.

He said the hoist was needed to take vessels out of the water for routine maintenance under the waterline, but delays and poor work meant he had to cancel services for too many of his customers.

He said: “It was embarrassing for my business and making me look like a complete idiot. It has been dragging on for ages and costing me quite a few quid. I complained and they said if I kicked up a fuss they would look at putting up my fees. It is not just me, a couple of other owners have moved their yachts away.

“It is a real shame because I have been sailing from Fleetwood for years and with the International Yacht Training course I was trying to put the port on the map.

“That training is recognised all around the world many more places than the Royal Yachting Association’s but now I will have to take it elsewhere.”

Andy is moving to La Linea in Spain near Gibraltar and says that his courses are booked up for the next two months.

An ABP spokesman: said: “ABP’s Port of Fleetwood is proud to hold a four Gold Anchors rating and the team work hard to provide the highest level of customer service to those using the marina. We are sorry to hear Mr Dobson is moving on and we wish him well with his new venture.”
