Drive to boost business conference visits

PUNKS and politicians are lining up to back Blackpool’s bid to cash in on business tourism with the launch of a glossy new brochure and film.

The resort pulls in more than 50,000 business tourism visitors every year which brings in more than £60m for the local economy.

John Robb launches the brochure in the Tower Circus Arena.

But now VisitBlackpool is aiming to increase that cash bonanza and has enlisted the help of larger than life music journalist and singer John Robb.

John was born in Fleetwood and went to Collegiate High School and Blackpool Sixth Form College.

His band Goldblade is a regular at Blackpool’s annual punk festival and his image now adorns the cover of the Conferences and Meetings brochure which lists hotels, conference venues, attractions and restaurants available.

He said: “Blackpool is just a really unique place – there is nowhere else in the world like it.

“To have so many historic buildings capable of hosting events is impressive. I know some people prefer bland modern buildings but Blackpool is different and offers so much more.

“I love the Victoriana. Blackpool is made for conferences. You can go to Bournemouth and Brighton but they are boring compared to Blackpool. We have so much variety here.”

Mandy Tythe-McCallum, business tourism manager at Marketing Blackpool, said: “We attract more than 50,000 business tourism visitors each year but we know that can be much higher.

“The film shows Blackpool can be adaptable whatever the request may be, from something formal to a spark of fun.”

The campaign is being backed by the town’s MPs.

Blackpool South MP Gordon Marsden said: “The 21st Century visitor has a rich variety of experiences to choose from – with striking new architecture and infrastructure alongside Blackpool’s traditional attractions.”

Paul Maynard, MP for Blackpool North and Cleveleys, added: “The great thing about the resort is it has so much to offer the business customer. The number and variety of venues is incredible ensuring business visitors get a real experience in Blackpool.”
