A lifelong Blackpool Football Club fan achieved a life ambition - by opening a business in an area with an FY post code.

And Seasiders supporter Haydn Hicks made it a double delight as he got two Bloomfield Road stars to officially open his new store.

Haydn has opened the third of his North West Bargain Booze franchises with a store on Blackpool Old Road, Poulton.

He said: “There was a Bargain Booze in Poulton previously but it left the group in January.

“I approached the insurance broker Paul Eiliffe, who agreed to reduce his floor space and sub let the premises to me. It has been a £90,000 investment on my part including the stock to keep the brand alive in Poulton.

“I have two other stores, one in Ulverston, South Cumbria and Ormskirk which are similar market towns.

“The Ulverston store won the Drinks Retailing Awards 2009, convenience store of the year award. It was about dedication, good store layout and community service.”

He said it was important to be community minded and he has just signed a deal to sponsor Poulton’s football team.

“I have been a Blackpool supporter for more than 40 years. It came from my grandad and dad who were big supporters. He said he had been part of the club’s itinerant support as he worked in retail across the county for more than 30 years.

“It was brilliant to get Blackpool’s Steve Thompson and young Tom Barkhuizen to open the store for me.

“Steve is a genuinely lovely man and a true Blackpool legend, as shown by the fact that more than 20 people turned out to see him and Tom.

“Tom is a fantastic local born talent and dedicated to the cause. It felt fantastic to have them there with me being such a close supporter for so many seasons. Now I am looking forward to working with the community of Poulton.”
