Shelved plans for a Fylde company to build aeroplanes for an Arab nation have been described as “devastating”.

BAE Systems, which has a site at Warton, has announced negotiations to supply Typhoon Aircraft to the United Arab Emirates have failed.

Coun Paul Rigby, who represents Fylde South on Lancashire County Council, said: “It’s devastating in all honesty.”

A statement on BAE’s website said: “BAE Systems and the UK Government have been in discussions with the Government of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) regarding a range of defence and security capabilities including the potential supply of Typhoon aircraft.

“The UAE have advised that they have elected not to proceed with these proposals at this time.”
