A seminar and a tug-of-war on central beach in Blackpool will help mark Fairtrade Week, which starts today.

The ‘un-fair’ tug of war takes place today at 4pm on the Comedy Carpet to highlight the ‘unfairness’ facing many of the world’s poorer countries.

Bruce Crowther, founder of the first Fairtrade town, Garstang, will deliver a free seminar at St John’s Conference Centre, St John’s Square, on Wednesday between 6.30pm and 8.30pm.

Coun Martin Mitchell, who campaigned for Blackpool to become a Fairtrade town, said: “We know some businesses in Blackpool are already in support of Fairtrade and we are looking for more of them to get on board in helping us to become a Fairtrade town and make Blackpool a fairer place to live and work.

“Being a Fairtrade business is a bigger gesture than just stocking a couple of products. It will help motivate employees, assist them to stand out from the crowd andkeep customers happy.”
