Hannah Sanderson, 16, who is a Young Leader at 1st Barton Brownies, was asked to be a roving reporter at the BIG GIG concert in Sheffield on June 13, held exclusively for 9,000 Guides.

She was chosen because of her role as a young spokesperson for the organisation, and got to go backstage to interview the likes of Little Mix, The Vamps, The Tide, Labrinth, Dionne Bromfield, M.O and boyband Union J.

“It was brilliant,” said Hannah, who has just completed her GCSEs at Broughton High School.

“I asked them how they got into music, what they thought about being role models, and whether they thought it was important or not that girls had role models.

“There were some deep questions but also some funny ones sent in from Guides, such as, ‘Would you rather have fingers on your feet or toes on your hands?’.

“They all gave thoughtful answers and were really friendly.”

Hannah joined the Girlguides as a Rainbow eight years ago and as well as being a Young Leader, is now also a member of 1st Broughton Senior Section which is for young women aged 14 to 25.

She said: “It’s just such a friendly organisation and there’s loads of opportunities available for you to get involved with, such as the BIG GIG.

“I love the BIG GIG because it gives girls the opportunity to see their favourite bands and to have fun with all of their friends.”

She hopes to go on to Newman College in September and said the experience, completed with fellow volunteer Tsitsi Mutamba, has made her think about a career in the media.

She added: “I wasn’t nervous, more excited and I felt really privileged to be doing the interview.

“It’s given me an insight into what reporters do and I would definitely do it again.

“I hope to do something with languages as a career, perhaps a BBC foreign correspondent.”

The BIG GIG is hosted by Girlguiding for members aged between 10 and 14, and has seen some of the biggest names in pop – including Ed Sheeran, Tinie Tempah and Rita Ora – perform at major venues around the UK over its 14-year history.
