An amateur pilot proposed to his girlfriend mid-flight with a giant message written in the sand on Blackpool beach below.

Thomas Bennett, 26, surprised Alison Moul, 27, on Monday as they took a flight over the resort in a private aircraft.

Friends and family gathered on the beach that day to write the words ‘Alison will you marry me?’ in the sand.

Thomas said: “They all made it at about 4pm and we had one hour to dig and rake.

“It came as a complete surprise and she had no idea what was coming. She read the ‘will you marry me’ and said it was cute, and then she read her name and looked back at me and I had the ring out for her. Luckily she said yes!”

Thomas, an engineer, and Alison, a college finance administrator, who are both from Cottam, Preston, started dating two years ago when they were set up by Thomas’ sister-in-law. They both volunteered for the Duke of Edinburgh award by running outdoor expeditions for young people.

They hope to get married in Woodplumpton, where Thomas grew up, in 2020.

Thomas, who has been flying since he was 19-years-old, said: “I try to do as much flying as I can privately and it’s a big part of our lives. I thought it was a good idea to tie it into the proposal somehow.

“It was just the two of us. I was flying and she was next to me in the passenger seat.

“We have an excellent relationship. She makes me the happiest person going. She’s a fantastic friend and partner and we both have a very positive attitude, and we’re both very outgoing, outdoorsy people.”
