Brian hopes for motor race hall of fame support

Brian Redman is vying for pole position for this year’s Motor Sport Hall of Fame Awards.

The glittering ceremony will take place on Wednesday June 7 in the spectacular surroundings of the Royal Automobile Club in Woodcote Park, Surrey, but it’s all down to that public vote.

Twelve greats from the rich world of sports cars have been chosen with the help of 2016 inductee and five-time Le Mans winner Derek Bell.

Brian, a legend in the glamorous world of sports car racing, is one of them. The ex-Rossallian is synonymous with Porsche but has excelled at the wheel of many others.

Name a competitive sports racing car of the late 1960s and early 1970s, and chances are good that he drove it.

Brian was so successful in sportscar racing from the 1960s and to the early 80s that he won the prestigious World Sportscar Championship several times and rubbed shoulders with the likes of Hollywood star Steve McQueen, who was renowned for racing fast cars himself.

Brian, 79, who attended Rossall in the 1950s and early 60s but now spends much of his time in Florida, said: “I’m excited to have a chance in this event, it is something that means a lot to me.

“And it is nice to think that people from Fleetwood and the Fylde coast may vote for me and help me get there. I am proud of my record in competing at top racing events and achieving success and it’s nice to think that legacy could be recognised.”

Brian’s proud record includes winning the Daytona 24 Hours three times, Sebring 12 Hours twice, the Nurburgring 1000 Ks twice, Monza 1000 Ks twice, Österreichring twice, Watkins Glen, the 1970 Targa Florio with a Porsche 908/3 and the Spa-Francorchamps 1000km race 4 times (1968–1972). In 1970/71 he was South Africa Springbok champion winning his class at the Kyalami 9 Hours and then had five successive victories in the factory Chevron B16/S.
