Bomb alert after find in field

A metal detecting enthusiast caused a bomb scare in Lancashire after finding an unknown object in a field.

The man was searching around a recently-ploughed field in Bretherton, near Leyland, yesterday afternoon when he found what he thought to be an unexploded bomb.

He alerted police, who cordoned off the area and went to investigate the mysterious metallic object.

On closer examination officers concluded it was part of some old farming machinery and reopened the area without alerting the bomb squad.

A police spokeman said: “This person reported what he had found with the best of intentions. We taped the area off as a precaution but we established that it was not a device.”

​Meanwhile, in other incidents fire crews from Chorley and Leyland attended a road traffic collision in Runshaw Lane, Euxton, involving one vehicle.

Firefighters arrived at the scene and found a car, stuck down a ditch, with a male casualty trapped. Crews quickly rescued the casualty and left the driver in the care of paramedics at the scene.

Firefighters were also called to addresses in Lancaster and Walton le Dale, near Preston.​

Two fire crews from Lancaster attended a fire in a kitchen after smoke had been seen coming from an extractor fan. When crews arrived at the scene​ in Brindle Mews yesterday afternoon​ they found the fire involved the grill pan.

They used breathing apparatus and a ventilation unit to clear the property of smoke​.

All occupants were able to safely evacuate the property after ​being alerted by smoke alarms​.

​Two fire engines from Bamber Bridge attended a fire involving a cooker on Severn Drive​, Walton le Dale​.

Firefighters used breathing apparatus, one hose reel and a ventilation unit to extinguish the fire and clear the property of smoke.

Part of the oven and a cupboard were damaged and there was moderate smoke damage to the rest of the kitchen and the hallway.
