THE body of a man was found hanged under Blackpool’s North Pier.
Beach patrol officers were called to the scene shortly after 2pm yesterday.
Eyewitness Andy Forrester, 61, from Blackpool, was on the Promenade when he saw officers under the pier.
He told The Gazette: “I was walking past when I saw a couple of holidaymakers trying to help with the recovery.
“I was shaking afterwards and had to go and see one of my friends for a drink.
“There were a lot of people in shock when I was down there.”
The Beach Patrol, Lytham Coastguard and the police attended the scene at 2.05pm.
The man – who is thought to be in his 40s – was pronounced dead at the scene and the beach was closed for an hour while his body was recovered and taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital.
Paul Little, station officer at Lytham Coastguard Station, said: “Blackpool Beach Patrol were the first people on the scene and we found the man about five to six feet up from the sand.”
A spokesman for Blackpool Beach Patrol said: “Our team were alerted to an incident at North Pier and the police were informed immediately.”
Blackpool Police said efforts were now under way to track down the man’s next of kin.
