Body discovered on railway tracks

Emergency services have found the body of a man on railway tracks between Burnley and Nelson after a train driver reported he believed his carriage had struck someone.

British Transport Police officers and firefighters from Nelson conducted a search of the line at around 3-30pm, which was closed by Network Rail.

A spokesman for British Transport Police said: “Our officers were called to Brierfield Railway Station, Nelson, shortly after 3pm today following reports of a person being struck by a train.

“Colleagues from Lancashire Police and North West Ambulance Service also attended but a man was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Officers are now working to identify the man and inform his family.

“The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”
