A BEAUTY salon owner today spoke of her devastation after a car ploughed into her shop – destroying her business.

The Celebrity Smile shop was only opened in Cleveleys six weeks ago, but today it lay in ruins.

A BMW veered off the road and careered through the front window after the 75-year-old driver is believed to have fallen ill at the wheel.

Shocked locals spoke of hearing a ‘huge bang’ as the car smashed through a bollard and into the window, at around 1.40pm yesterday.

Police said the driver was uninjured but was taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital for further examination. The crash caused serious structural damage to the Victoria Road West business, which was closed at the time of the crash, as well as destroying equipment inside the shop.

Salon owner, who only gave her name as Vikki, said: “I don’t know what has happened, I think the driver had some sort of seizure at the wheel, but the salon is a mess – it’s smashed up.

“I was at home when it happened, preparing for a busy Monday at work when my neighbour knocked on the door and told me what had happened.

“I can’t believe it, we only opened around six weeks ago. We had got the place looking good and I was working hard building up a client base, then this happens.

“It’s going to be a real inconvenience, but it’s one of those things and I am just glad no-one was hurt, I hope everyone is okay.

“My little boy was sitting in the shop window all afternoon on Saturday and we had a lot of customers in, if it had happened then it would have been a different story.”

Mobile beauty therapist Amy Rose Hesford, who works at the salon, added: “We had only just got started, I can’t believe it.

“I was a few doors down when it happened.

“All that work and now look at it, the car has gone right into the salon and all the cabinets and some of the equipment has been destroyed.

“It is a real shock to see it like that, I am glad no-one was in the shop, that we do have to be thankful for.”

One local shopkeeper, who did not want to be named, added: “I heard a bang, it was like shutters being slammed shut so I looked out of the window and saw the car.

“After that it was bedlam, police cars arrived and an ambulance to take away the driver, he seemed very shaken, I don’t think he was saying very much.

“I couldn’t believe it when I saw a car sticking out of the window, it is a busy road and we get lots of traffic but I have never seen anything like that before.”

A building inspector was due to assess the damage to the property today.

A Lancashire Police spokesman said: “A black BMW convertible crashed into the front window of a teeth whitening and beauty salon on Sunday afternoon.

“At this time we believe the 75-year-old driver of the vehicle has fallen ill at the wheel and has had a seizure.

“He has been taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital. We do not believe he sustained injuries during the incident, but the cause of his ill health is being looked into.

“A major concern is the safety of the building.

“It has sustained serious structural damage and an engineer will be down to assess it.

“A section of the road was closed for some time while the vehicle was recovered.”
