The Tower top and heart will shine yellow and blue on Thursday, as part of raising awareness of ways that residents can help the thousands of people in the town who are affected by the condition.

Latest NHS figures show that almost 1,000 tumours were identified in Blackpool in 2013, with 2,800 diagnosed between 2011 and 2013.

In an attempt to show solidarity with local cancer sufferers and to raise more money into researching the disease, Blackpool Council has agreed to light the iconic Tower throughout Thursday evening.

Coun Graham Cain, cabinet secretary for Blackpool Council, said: “Cancer is an awful illness and is one that has affected most people in one way or another.

“However, through research and modern medicine practice, improvements are beginning to be made to limit its impact and survival rates are improving.

“Lighting up the Tower may seem like a small token; however it shows this Council’s commitment to helping cancer sufferers and
continuing to raise awareness of this horrible disease.

“As well as showing solidarity with cancer sufferers, it is also important that we use World Cancer Day to remind people of some things that can reduce the chance of getting cancer.

“That includes avoiding sunbeds, giving up smoking and keeping your alcohol consumption under the recommended guidelines of 14 units a week.

Making some simple changes to your lifestyle, like eating healthily and taking regular exercise, can also help lower your risk of getting cancer.”

The Illuminations on the Tower legs are currently out of order, while work to repair the steelwork and remove the scaffolding is completed.
