Committed wool warriors are organising a world record attempt on the Prom at South Shore, early next month.

They are appealing for everyone to join them in the bid to have the most people in one spot knitting at the same time.

The event at 11am, on Sunday July 10, is open to anyone and lessons in knitting will take place which will count towards beating the record which stands at 3,089 people, set in London.

It is being organised by Susanne Johnson who runs a wool and haberdashery shop in Bond Street.

She said: “All the world records for knitting are held in London.

“As a born and bred Northerner, that gets my goat. It’s time for northern knitters to show the South East that when it comes to knitting and nattering, we can out-knit and out-natter all of them. Come help us bring a knitting world record to the North.

“The idea is to bring more people to the town and knitting people often tend to be a hardy bunch so are willing to travel.

“I hope they will get behind us and turn up on the day.

“We have had a good response to our Facebook appeal so far and I am confident that will have a great day.

“We have had people from all over saying they will come but we still need more.

“We have volunteers to oversee the record attempt, the Guinness Book of Records is very strict and we have to have wristbands, stewards and everything. People can bring their own wool and knitting needles but we will have some available on the day.

“Children can join in too and can have lessons and we will be giving out certificates which they can show their Scout and Guides leaders and use towards getting their badges.

“We will also be having a special performance artist to entertain people on the day. She is called Miss Inform and she is a larger-than-life character and very Blackpool!”

Susanne recently fell foul of the council when she yarn-bombed Bond Street without permission by putting up colourful knitted decorations on lamp-posts and street furniture. But the council has confirmed the record attempt can go ahead.

She added: “We’re running this event to bring lots of lovely knitters into the deprived South Beach area, hopefully bringing footfall to struggling shopping streets.”
