Blackpool sea rescue teams called out 9 times in just one day

Sea rescue teams in Blackpool were called out 9 times to reports of people in danger in the water yesterday (August 17).

It was a very busy day for rescue volunteers on the Fylde coast, with both HM Coastguard and RNLI teams playing a major role in at least nine separate incidents.

This is how the day unfolded for Blackpool's brave rescue volunteers.

8.11am - Call out 1

Coastguard were called out to help police with an incident in St Annes. The team were stood down whilst on route as the police had the situation in hand.

4.10pm - Call out 2

Called out to reports of two missing children last seen in the water close to South Pier.

Crews quickly arrived on scene and started searching the beach and Promenade along with police and Blackpool Beach Patrol, whilst RNLI Blackpool searched the water.

Fortunately, the two children sensibly made their way back to their hotel where the police located them and all units were stood down.

6.10pm - Call out 3

Called out for a third time to reports of a number of people in danger of being cut off by the incoming tide between Little Bispham and Anchorsholme.

Both the Atlantic 85 lifeboat and one of the D-class lifeboats were launched, but coastguards and RNLI teams found the people making their way off the beach. Safety advice was given.

The coastguard team then spotted a family of four playing in the water and they were advised that the tide was quickly flooding the area and safety advice was issued.

6.40pm - Call out 4

As the team were standing down, the Coastguard HQ in Holyhead then received reports of somebody possibly in difficulty in the water at Blackpool.

The team swiftly set off for the location but the casualty was already in the care of police and North West Ambulance Service.

9.13pm - Call out 5

The Coastguard were called out at 9.13pm for the fourth time that evening to reports of three swimmers possibly in the sea near Central Pier.

The Coastguard arrived on scene very quickly, alongside RNLI Blackpool, police and the ambulance service. Lytham Coastguard then took lead of the search and a search plan was organised from Central Pier to South Pier.

Three of the Cromer lifeboats searched the shore line whilst Blackpool RNLI searched the water with one of its D-Class lifeboats. With no sightings in the area, no cause for concern was found and rescue teams were stood down. It was later confirmed that the swimmers had been spotted swimming safely back to shore.

11.02pm - Call out 6

Responded to reports of a person in the water in the North Shore area. A Cromer all-weather lifeboat was launched and quickly arrived on scene to help police pull a casualty from the water before he was passed into the care of the officers.

RNLI Blackpool were also tasked with searching the area, but were stood down on route.

11.17pm - Call out 7

The second call came through whilst teams was dealing with the first job. The crew received reports that a person was in the water, possibly in difficulty around the Blackpool Tower area.

Teams quickly arrived on scene and found a man with the help of RNLI Blackpool shore crew. The casualty was passed into the care of police. The RNLI also searched between Central Pier and the Tower to make sure nobody else was in difficulty.

00.06am - Call out 8

Volunteers were called out shortly after midnight to reports of a person possibly in the water in the North Shore area of Blackpool.

Coastguard crews quickly arrived on scene and helped police, who then transferred the casualty into their vehicle and took them to a place of safety.

00.22am - Call out 9

The second call came through straight after, with crews tasked with helping police in Fleetwood in the search for a missing and vulnerable person.

The teams arrived on scene and helped with the search, from the Five Bar Gate to the Marine Hall. Crews searched for more than an hour, until around 1.45am, before the casualty was found by police not far away.

All units were stood down and returned to their stations.
