Blackpool school in past pupils plea

Former pupils of a Blackpool primary school are being invited to a reunion before the old buildings are demolished ahead of a move to new classrooms.

And teachers at Hawes Side Academy are asking for people from some of the old photographs held at the school to come forward as a school museum of memories event takes place.

The Pedders Lane school will move into purpose built buildings at the start of term in September thanks to help from to the Government’s Priority Schools BuildingProgramme.

But next week it will be holding a reunion picnic on Saturday, July 16, from 3pm-6pm for all connected to the school since it opened nearly 80 years ago.

Wendy Barnes from the school said they were hoping people would recognise themselves or friends from the photographs and let the school know.

Wendy said: “We have a large archive of photos and memorabilia and have been amazed at the interest and enthusiasm shown, from people from all walks of life, who attended Hawes Side or have worked there.

“As well as the reunion picnic this Saturday, the school will also be open for pre-arranged visits from 2-4pm the week beginning Monday July 11.

“This will be one last opportunity to look round the old buildings which will be demolished later in the Summer to make room for new outdoor provision.

The present school was built 1937 and opened by councillor W Rostron Duckworth.

It had 10 classrooms, an outdoor quadrangle and a small fixed stage.

The total cost was £14.000.

The reunion will take the form of a picnic in the old school grounds.

There will be a DJ and bouncy castle.

All families, past and present, connected with the school are welcome and should bring their own food and drink, plus rugs, garden chairs if necessary.

As well as the museum of school memories there will be one last chance to enjoy a look round the old building.
