What makes a great family hotel?
Well it seems one Blackpool business knows the answer.
The Doric Hotel, on Queens Promenade, North Shore, was last week named the UK’s number one family hotel by travel website Trip Advisor.
It was also ranked 10th best in Europe, which is a huge achievement when you consider the amount of accommodation it was up against.
General manager John Kay says ensuring both children and their parents get the most out of their holiday is the key to their success.
He said: “Having the right facilities to cater for families is very important, and we have both an indoor and an outdoor pool. We are the only hotel on the Prom with an outdoor pool. It is a real suntrap, and last summer it was very busy.
“But it’s also about good service, and we give the youngsters as much care and attention as their mums and dads, grannies and grandads.
“For example, the children have their own entertainment and there is a separate children’s menu.
“Last year, what has been very popular is the addition of healthy options to the children’s menu.
“We have family suites which have a separate sleeping area for children, and their own TV, so that means privacy for different members of the family.
“What we aim for is for the children to enjoy their holiday, but the parents can relax and have a great time too.”
The three-star Doric boasts 103 bedrooms and employs between 50 and 60 part- and full-time staff.
It has been owned by Simon and Brian Taylor for 11 years, and they also own the Park House Hotel on North Promenade.
John added: “It is important to keep your premises up to date, and Simon and Brian are continually investing in both their properties.
“For example, up to £40,000 is going into a new ‘Pavilion on the Prom’ for the Park House Hotel to hold weddings and dinners.
“Our next step for the Doric is to install wifi in all the bedrooms, because that is something that has come up on our guest questionnaires, and we listen to what our guests say.
“Winning this accolade is great for our staff, but it is also good for Blackpool because we are helping bring more families into the resort.”
And the award is already making a difference to trade.
John said: “We have definitely noticed an increase in telephone calls since this Tripadvisor award was announced.”
