The route, which links Clifton Road in Marton with Progress Way, will shut for three weeks from a point approximately 50 metres north of the Chapel Road junction for a distance of 40 metres.

Drivers travelling from Progress Way will follow a diversion east along the A5320 to junction four of the M55 onto Preston New Road, while motorists wishing to travel from Clifton Road to Progress Way will follow the route in reverse. Pedestrian access will be maintained.

Meanwhile from April 11, Midgeland Road will close between Moss House Road and Progress Way for three weeks as part of the same project to upgrade sewers in the area.

Stanley ward councillor Jason Roberts said he had spoken to United Utilities to ensure residents were kept fully informed of the road closures.

But he added: “The planned works on Midgeland Road, with a closure at Progress way and how this over laps with the Ashworth Road closure does continue to concern me.

“In particular is the impact on roads such as Chapel Road which is unsuitable for large volumes of traffic.”

Bob Beddall, of Discount Tyres on Ashworth Road, said: “The businesses will be open as usual so we just hope disruption is minimised.”
