Blackpool pupils learn how to grow their own food

Youngsters are learning about healthy eating from cultivation right through to the kitchen at a Blackpool school.

Our Lady of Assumption School on Common Edge Road, Marton, has its own polytunnel enabling fruit and vegetables to be grown all year round.

Stanley ward councillors Jason Roberts and Andrew Stansfield joined children at their after school club to officially open the polytunnel and see the work being done by pupils.

Teacher Margaret Campbell said; “Our polytunnel project started five months ago.

“Both our local councillors had a chance to meet the children and learn about their school’s gardening journey.

“The polytunnel is a great addition to our education programme enabling fruit and vegetables to be grown all year round.

“All the children in school are invited to plant crops before being helped by our school cook who enjoys running healthy food tasting classes.”
