A labourer, Mr Giles had been working in Scotland before his death.

At around 11.30pm on February 7, Mr Giles and Mr Noble were caught on CCTV leaving a hotel, and their car was seen leaving the area. Mr Giles was driving, while Mr Noble occupied the front passenger seat.

Around 15 minutes later, while driving on the B970, a witness saw Mr Giles lose control of his car and crash into a fence.

He tried to regain control of the vehicle, but crashed into a pillar, a hedge and finally a tree at high speed.

An investigation carried out by Scottish police found that Mr Giles was to blame for the crash.

Concluding the inquest, coroner Alan Wilson said: "The medical cause of death was a head injury caused by a road traffic collision.

"When he was working in Scotland, Christopher was involved in a fatal crash, with his colleague in the front passenger seat.

"Christopher was driving a Ford S-Max late in the evening on February 7 when he drove at an excessive speed and lost control of the car, and left the road before colliding with a tree.

"A toxicology report confirmed Christopher had consumed alcohol prior to his death."
