A Blackpool man has become the first in the county to have a new criminal courts charge imposed on him.

Denver T Varley was jailed for 24 weeks and told he must pay the £180 charge after he admitted three charges of assault and breaching a restraining order when he appeared before Blackpool magistrates.

Varley, 50, of Devonshire Road, assaulted a friend who had taken him into her home after he had split up with his girlfriend.

He further admitted assaulting that girlfriend when she turned up at his home. He then assaulted a man who tried to intervene.

The criminal courts charge must be imposed on all defendants appearing at Magistrates and Crown Court who plead guilty or who are found guilty.

The charges are scaled from £100 to £1,000 according to the type of offence.

Varley who came to the UK from Detroit, USA, had, according to his lawyer, developed a drink problem after being wrongly accused of another crime.
