Blackpool helicopter team deliver Super Puma to Spain

The Eurocopter Super Puma, a four-bladed, twin-engine, utility helicopter which is one of the largest aircraft in civil operation, flew into Blackpool Airport to re-fuel, piloted by resort pilots, from Blackpool-based aviation company Helispeed.

Commonly used for transporting crew to North Sea rigs, the bright red aircraft is now to carry out fire fighting duties in Spain.

Helispeed’s worldwide operation is based at Hangar Three, and is responsible for flight testing and the safe delivery of the Super Puma. The firm is one of the largest pilot providers in the UK with over 420 located all over the world, working on a number of global contracts from offshore to VIP operations.

Geoff Packer, CEO of Helispeed and the pilot responsible for delivering the Super Puma to Spain, said: “We chose Blackpool as our base as it is a great airport with easy flying links throughout the UK.

"It is easy to get in and out of and is a lot cheaper than landing at Manchester or other larger, busier, regional airports. Blackpool is a great stop to re-fuel.”

Coun Mark Smith, cabinet member for regeneration, enterprise and economic development said: "I welcome the news that Blackpool Airport has been chosen as a great place to do business, as a cost effective and pleasant alternative to some of the larger regional airports.
