Blackpool girl, 5, seriously injured after being hit by van in Anchorsholme

A five-year-old girl has been seriously injured after she was hit by a van in Anchorsholme yesterday evening (July 23).

Emergency services rushed to the scene in Luton Road where the child was knocked down by a Mercedes Vito van at 5.20pm.

An air ambulance landed at nearby East Pines Park, but the injured girl was taken to Liverpool's Alder Hey Children's Hospital by road instead.

North West Ambulance Service has confirmed that the child suffered serious injuries to her head and leg, but she had been conscious at the scene.

Police said the van driver stopped at the scene and has co-operated with officers. No arrests have been made.

Staff from nearby Anchorsholme Academy were reportedly the first on the scene and cared for the girl until paramedics arrived.

An NWAS spokesman said: "We were called at 5.23pm to reports of a collision between a vehicle and pedestrian.

"We attended with an air ambulance, rapid response vehicle and land ambulance and took a child to hospital by land ambulance with serious injuries.

"She was a female aged approximately five-years-old."

Eight police vehicles attended the scene and Luton Road was closed between North Drive and Eastpines Drive for around two hours whilst an investigation took place.

A police spokesman added: "We were called around 5.20pm yesterday after a collision on Luton Road, Blackpool.

"A Mercedes Vito van had been involved in a collision with a five-year-old girl.

"The driver remained at the scene and no arrests were made.

"The girl suffered bruising to her head and leg. She was taken to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital for treatment."
