Blackpool butchers to shut up shop after 50 years

Ron Reddy Butchers will cease trading after 50 years, blaming the economic climate on its decision, with six staff facing redundancy.

The butchers on Topping Street, announced the decision to close the shop via signs in the windows (inset).

The sign thanked customers for their custom over the past 50 years.

An employee of Ron Reddy Butchers, who wished to remain anonymous, said she has worked at the shop for 27 years.

She added: “It will be a sad day when it closes.

“We only found out on Tuesday that the shop will be closing.”

The business has been owned by Margaret and Martin Gregory since November 2016.

Customers of the butchers have expressed their disappointment it will be closing.

Richardson, 65, from Warbreck said: “It’s quite a shock to hear it’s closing down.

“I’ve been coming for probably two decades, maybe once or twice a month and the meat is great quality.

“I feel for the staff as its their livelihood.”

Rachel Hill, 54, from South Shore believes that bigger retailers are hurting the independent shops.

She said: “Most people don’t shop at local butchers anymore, they would rather go to supermarkets to get their meat.

“It’s a shame because we should be supporting local businesses.”

The Gazette tried to make contact with the owners who were unavailable for comment.
