Blackpool boxers brave bruises for charity

Volunteers are all set to take part in a white collar boxing tournament at the Paradise Rooms at the Pleasure Beach on Saturday from 5pm.

The 16 boxers will be helping to raise money for a tricycle for 11-year-old Demi Leigh who has severe autism and epilepsy.

Her condition affects her balance and she has no sense of danger. The trike will help develop her balance and mobility.

Mum Karen said: “My daughter has complex needs and she uses a wheelchair.

“Without the correct equipment I fear that Demi-Leigh will be limited to the activities that she can access. A specialist tricycle would allow my daughter to get out more and help her to possibly make new friends.”

Karen contacted Caudwell Children, the national charity that provides practical and emotional support to disabled children.

They identified a suitable tricycle for her daughter but the £1,500 needed was beyond Karen’s budget.

That’s when the team at the Unique Training Centre, based on Talbot Road, stepped in to offer their support.

Scot Tudhope, owner said: “I supported a Caudwell Children beneficiary four years ago and I recently decided that I wanted to give something back to the community again, this year.”

Unique Training Centre offers a wide variety of martial arts training and this will be its seventh show having done five for a local armed forces charity. Scot is looking to raise £1,500 for the charity and has asked that the excess be used to fund sensory equipment for autistic children in Blackpool.

“I can’t thank Unique Training Centre and Caudwell Children enough,” said Karen.

The tickets at £30 or £50 include a three course meal.
