Welcome banners are to be installed to greet visitors to one of Blackpool's main holiday areas.

Around 20 flags will be attached to posts along Coronation Street and Charnley Road.

The banners are being funded through a grant of nearly £7,000 from the ward budget of Talbot ward councillors Mark Smith and Ian Coleman.

They will have the words ‘Welcome’ and ‘Central Holiday Area’ emblazoned on them in a bid to promote businesses in the area.

Coun Smith said: “A few comments had been raised to me about doing something to promote the area and make it more welcoming for visitors.

“So we have decided to put the banners up on metal posts which are already there.

“They will be similar to the banners on Yeadon Way, but they are not advertising anywhere in particular, just welcoming people to this area.

“I think it will make the area more colourful and brighter, and we will also look at other things we can do to support the businesses in the area.”

The funding will be given to the council’s tourism arm Visit Blackpool to install the banners, with work due to be carried out this month in time for the Illuminations.

Banners will remain in place for 12 months initially but the scheme could be extended.

In 2009, businesses on Charnley Road paid for the street to have its own Illuminations, and there is also a ‘Welcome to Charnley Road’ overhanging sign.

Banners have been displayed along Yeadon Way for a number of years advertising individual businesses.
