Bake Off star cooks up a storm

Sweet-toothed bakers served up plates of sugary treats for a discerning eye '“ all for a good cause.

Great British Bake Off 2017 runner-up Kate Lyon was the special guest judge at Blackpool Sixth Form College’s bake off-style cookery competition on Monday.

Schoolchildren, college students and members of the public were invited to submit their own stunning showstoppers, and make a cash donation to Trinity Hospice.

Jon McLeod, head of marketing at Blackpool Sixth, said: “The judges were hugely impressed with the quality of the entries across the three age categories. The youngest baker was just six-years-old.

“We were so delighted that Kate was able to spare so much of her time to support this charity event.

“The standard of the baking was amazingly high and we are really pleased that the event has raised so much money for a really important cause.”

The bake off raised more than £550 for Trinity Hospice with the help of large raffle prizes donated by Twelve Restaurant, education catererTaylor Shaw, Blossom Boutique and Lancashire Prop Hire.

Kate, from Liverpool, gave a talk about her time on the Great British Bake Off, followed by a Q&A session.

The school student prize was won by Lucy Wilcock for a set of decorated cupcakes.

Blackpool Sixth Form student Alex Greaves won the college category for decorated muffins.

The open category was won by Nicola Stevens with her Manchester worker bee sponge cake.
