A POLICE investigation is underway after two axe-wielding raiders struck at a convenience store in a quiet Fylde village.

The incident happened at Co-Op on Chain Lane, Staining, at around 9.45pm on Thursday.

Detectives believe the two men, who both had their faces covered with scarves, entered the store just before closing time and approached the staff who were stood behind the till.

They have made off with an undisclosed sum of money.

Police closed off the area around the shop last night while a preliminary investigation got underway.

They spoke to people in the area surrounding the store and checked on CCTV in and around the shop.

Officers are expected to be back at the scene today while the inquiry continues to try to track down those responsible.

Staff at the store declined to comment this morning.

It is the second time in as many years the shop has been targeted by thieves.

In August 2009, raiders carrying large “machette-type” knives threatened staff before making off with an undisclosed sum.

They fled the scene in a black Vauxhall Astra,
