A young runner dreaming of Olympic stardom is thriving after securing a vital cash injection from The Gazette.
Katy Wyper, 22, received £250 from The Gazette’s £10,000 community giveaway earlier this month to help realise her ambitions of competing at the top level.
Now in one of her first competitions since the awards, the North of England Championships, she showed her potential with a string of strong placings.
Katy was one of 36 groups or individuals to benefit from the awards which saw The Gazette team up with the Swallowdale Children’s Trust to help deserving young people.
Derek Newton, Katy’s senior sprints coach at Blackpool, Wyre and Fylde Athletics Club, said: “Katy finished second in her favoured event, the 100m and third in the 200m just behind established, senior international athletes.
“Katy is now ranked number two nationally in her age group in the UK.
“Katy will now run at the British U23 championships next weekend and is hopeful for selection to the Great Britian U23 team for the European championships in Tallinn later this year.
“The generous donation by The Swallowdale Trust will assist Katy in her preparation and accommodation for these trials and beyond.
“She is extremely grateful for the support provided and I can assure you it will be of great benefit to Katy in her future development.”
