Apprentice celebrates being on course

James Kirkham is an apprentice greenkeeper at St Annes Old Links golf course, earning while he learns on the job.

He is one of dozens of apprentices training through Myerscough College, which is celebrating National Apprenticeships Week this week.

The 17-year-old, from Lytham, took on the role after realising college study wasn’t for him.

He said: “There is a good mix of practical and taught work with lots of research required into the various knowledge units of the scheme.

“I get lots of support at work and even better I earn a wage at the same time.”

The apprentice works under the supervision of course manager Stuart Hogg.

He said: “It’s great that we can give a young person the opportunity to learn the trade.”
