Appeal to put names on town’s memorial

An appeal has been made for information about any overlooked local war heroes or heroines, to enable their names to be included on Garstang’s war memorial.

The Town Council wants to ensure those who have fallen in conflicts since the end of the Second World War are remembered.

Town Clerk Edwina Parry said: “The War Memorial records the names of those servicemen from Garstang and Barnacre-with–Bonds who lost their lives during the First and Second World Wars.

“Conflicts since the Second World War include those in India, Korea, Suez, Palestine, Cyprus, Aden, Vietnam, Malaya, the Falklands, the Gulf, Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanistan, Iraq and others. The Town Council is considering ways in which the names of any servicemen or women who have died in any of these conflicts may be added to the War Memorial so that they may be remembered along with those from the First and Second World Wars.”

The council recently undertook repairs to the memorial with the aid of a grant from the War Memorial Trust and arrangements were also made to display poppy wreaths more effectively.

If you know of anyone who should be remembered, send his or her name and details to Edwina Parry, Room G17, Garstang Business and Community Centre, High Street, Garstang PR3 1EB or email [email protected].
