The 12-year-old poodle was being walked by its owner in Ramsgate Road Park, St Annes, at 12.15pm on July 29 when the terrier pounced.

The poodle’s owner managed to part the dogs but, in her rush to save her pet, she failed to get an accurate description of the Staffy’s owner – other than that he was an elderly man.

The attack was so severe and brutal the poodle had to be put down by a vet.

Fylde Council’s dog wardens are now appealing for public help in tracing the terrier’s owner.

Sarah Wilson, (pictured), who is in charge of the dog warden service, said: “This was a vicious and entirely unprovoked attack by the Staffy upon a helpless smaller dog.

“It was terrifying as well for the poodle’s owner.

“All we know is that the owner was an elderly man and that the Staffordshire bull terrier was black and wore a studded collar.

“We want to make sure that owners and their dogs are safe when exercising in Fylde.

“Anybody with information or who knows the owner of the Staffordshire bull terrier is asked to contact the Town Hall on (01253) 658658 to assist us with our investigations.”

The council’s ban on pets using St Annes beach continues until September 30.

Leisure use in summer by residents and tourists means the beach, between the far endof North Promenade car-park by the old toilet block and the RNLI slipway, must be clean.

Dogs can be walked on the main St Annes beach either on or off their lead between 30 September and 1 May.

Mrs Wilson said: “Residents and visitors need a part of the beach that is dog-free.

“We think this is a good balance to strike between their needs and the needs of dog owners who still have miles of beach to use freely all year round.”
