Around 30 firefighters tackled the blaze at Springfield House Farm on Burned House Lane.

At the height of the incident a number of animals had to be rescued as the fire spread to surrounding wooden farm buildings.

Fire chiefs estimate 104 bales of hay – around 60 tonnes – were in the barn.

Five fire crews were rushed to the scene, but by 7.30am Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service had scaled down their operation.

Incident commander Paul Briggs said: “When we arrived at the scene the barn at the rear of the farm was affected.

“There were 104 bales of hay in there and we had to evacuate 10 pigs who were in an enclosure next to the barn.

“There was a potential danger of smoke to local residents but we were able to contain the incident.

“We are not treating the incident as suspicious but we are investigating the cause of the fire.”
