INTERNATIONAL tourists are set to be offered a direct link to Blackpool after a new resort rail-service was launched at one of the region’s busiest airports.

Travellers flying into Liverpool John Lennon Airport will now have the option of hopping straight onto an hourly train to Blackpool North – while residents hoping to jet off for some sun will also benefit from the direct service.

And the resort is hoping to capitalise on its latest European link-up and bring more tourists flocking to the town.

Coun Graham Cain, Blackpool Council’s cabinet member for tourism and culture, said: “I welcome the link-up with another international airport and hope it will bring more international guests to Blackpool.

“Now we’ve got this link I’ll be working to ensure we have a presence at the airport promoting Blackpool as a place to stay.”

Trains from the town’s station will call at the new Liverpool South Parkway station as part of Northern Rail’s route between Blackpool North and Liverpool Lime Street.

From there, passengers will be able to get straight to the airport using a new bus connection.

And Blackpool North MP Paul Maynard said: “This is great news and I’m delighted.

“It will allow people from Blackpool easier access to Liverpool Airport to take their well deserved summer holidays.

“Also, it will allow people from Merseyside and those flying into Liverpool greater opportunity to explore all Blackpool has to offer.

“I’d urge the Council to work with the Airport and the airlines who use it to market what Blackpool has to offer as Britain’s premier family holiday destination.”

Gordon Marsden, Blackpool South MP, added: “I hope it will be beneficial both for residents of Blackpool using Liverpool John Lennon Airport but also people arriving there and wanting to visit Blackpool as part of their trip to the north west.”

The new service will run hourly between Monday and Saturday from 9:37am until 2:37pm, with an additional service at 8:38am on Saturdays.

Lee Wasnidge, area director for Northern Rail, said: “This new service will really open up the journey opportunities for thousands of people around the North West, with more connections to Liverpool John Lennon Airport”
