The essential upgrade – which will allow extra services to call at the airport and provide passengers with better access from across the north of England - is part of the £1bn investment in the railway.

Most of the work to build the fourth platform was done during construction of the Metrolink platform to minimise disruption but track laying and installation of systems has to be completed.

To complete the work only two platforms will be in use between Sunday, January 11 and Saturday, January 17 and the station will then be closed to all trains until Monday, February 9.
