Academy is in tune for instrument bid

In April we launched our campaign to leave a lasting musical legacy in the resort.

We asked kind-hearted Gazette readers to donate 50 instruments to the Blackpool Music Academy in Waterloo Road, as well as raise £20,000 to subsidise music lessons.

So far, 42 instruments have been donated with this week’s haul including a clarinet and flute – but the academy’s management is now urging others to help reach the magical 50-mark.

Music academy manager John Shaw said the instruments were already helping students to learn.

He added: “The response has been tremendous.

“To nearly hit the target of 50 in just a few months is testament to Gazette readers.

“We are only eight away – I just hope people continue looking in their sheds, lofts and cupboards ; there must be more instruments to help us.”

Founded by Mr Shaw in 2006, the academy was created with the aim of making music accessible to people from all walks of life.

Classes at the centre cover a range of instruments from the keyboard to the ukulele and no experience is necessary.

The Gazette’s Give Us A Tune campaign has already won the backing of famous names including DJ Danny Howard, musical star Jodie Prenger and singer Little Boots.

Last month Blackpool-born Pet Shop Boys member Chris Lowe donated a keyboard.

Academy member Julie Jackson added: “The donations have been steady and kept coming in – we just need a final push to hit our first target.”
