When Jean and Campbell Scott came to Blackpool on honeymoon, they had to spent their first night sleeping in the car because their hotel was closed.

Jean and Campbell Scott (front) celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with family, mayor Ian Coleman and deputy mayor and mayoress Gary Coleman and Debbie Coleman

But the unpromising start to both their marriage and holiday thankfully failed to dent either their love for each other or for the resort.

For the couple, of Coatbridge, near Glasgow, have just celebrated both their 50th wedding anniversary - and 50 years of visiting Blackpool.

And to mark the occasion they were given a special civic reception at the town hall.

Blackpool Mayor Coun Ian Coleman said: “They have supported Blackpool by visiting every year for 50 years and it was also their 50th wedding anniversary this year.

“So it was a joy to share it with them.

“Blackpool is the best holiday resort in the country, and this family has proved it by coming here for 50 years.”

The reception was organised after Jean, 67, and 73-year-old Campbell’s granddaughter Jennifer wrote to the Mayor’s office.

She said in her letter: “Since celebrating their honeymoon in Blackpool 50 years ago, having to sleep in their car overnight as the hotel was shut when they arrived, my grandparents have been visiting Blackpool every year since, never missing a year - not even when my papa had a stroke whilst driving to Blackpool a few years ago.

“Blackpool holds a very special place in their hearts and has many great memories for us all.

“Blackpool is in their blood, with my papa even being known as ‘Mr Blackpool’ in his days driving taxis here in Scotland.”

The couple have three children and six grandchildren and love to stay at The Cliffs Hotel.
