BILLY the Kid is all set to spin again, or rather an older and wiser Rod Allsworth, who found fame and a good following at venues across the Fylde coast during the 1970s.
Rod is one of several DJs helping to recreate the atmosphere of popular nightspot Gallopers, for one night only, this Friday.
The venue opened within the long-demolished Showboat complex on Cleveleys seafront in 1972 and for the next four years played host to a number of local DJs including Rod (in his Billy The Kid guise), Pete Schofield, John Stewart (aka Butty), Brian Wilkinson, Mike Best, Mike Chadwick, Jim Hodgkinson and Tony Jebb.
Gallopers’ music format was the main disco tracks of the day interspersed with Northern Soul first played in other nightspots.
And the Showboat itself hosted some big soul names, including the likes of Major Lance and the Detroit Emeralds, as this 1970s advert shows.
The Gallopers night this Friday is upstairs at The British Legion Club, Rough Lea Road, Cleveleys, 8pm to 1am, admission £4. Details on (01253) 852450.
