Flats proposal would ‘revive street scene’

Plans to convert a former nightclub into flats would revive a Georgian Grade II-listed building, a councillor has claimed.

An application has been submitted to Fylde Council to convert the former Cube bar, on Preston Street, Kirkham, into five new apartments.

The building has been closed since 2009 – and a previous plan to turn it into a nursing home was scrapped due to a lack of interest.

Coun Keith Beckett, who represents Kirkham North on Fylde Council, has welcomed the proposed development.

He said: “I heard rumours that things were going on.

“The building’s an absolute disgrace at the moment.

“If somebody’s willing to invest and turn it into flats, I can’t see the problem.”

Coun Beckett believes the development would improve the aesthetics of the Preston Street area.

“It’s a shame to see a building like that go to wrack and ruin, it’ll tidy the whole area up. It’ll be better if it’s being lived in than nothing being done with it at all.

“It’ll keep the same character of the building because that’s what you miss nowadays with modern buildings, you lose the character of the town.”

If the plans are agreed it would be the second major regeneration of a dilapidated site in Kirkham town centre, following the demolition of the George pub.

The iconic pub stood at the junction of Poulton Street, Moor Street and Station Road. It has made way for 12 apartments.

The agent for the applicant was not available for comment.
