Star baker Andrea Ousby has scooped gold and silver awards at her first entry to an international competition.
Andrea started making cakes 10 years ago as a hobby at her home in Freckleton, but her Celebration Cakes and Sugarcraft business has steadily grown and now she’s busy producing for all occasions.
Last week the 44-year-old decided to pit her skills against hundreds of others from across the world at the Cake International show at Manchester’s Event City.
She had two entries into the wedding cake category – one with three tiers, vintage roses and a birdcage, and other with nine tiers, silver shards, snowflakes, domes and diamonds.
The cakes, which each took a few weeks to design and construct from icing and sugar paste, were judged on appearance and assembled at the show on their polystyrene bases.
Andrea said: “I felt the wedding cake class was more of a challenge, as the judges are very strict and thorough.
“I am so chuffed to have won gold and silver, particularly as this is the first cake competition I’ve ever taken part in.
“Brian Taylor, the chairman of the judges, said I’d achieved all the specifications required in the class and the standard this year was very high, which is extremely flattering.
“I was advised that the most important part of these competitions is having a unique idea and once you’ve got that you’re half way there.
“I wanted to base mine around snowflakes as it ties in nicely with this time of year.
“Winning my first gold and silver, especially in the same category, leaves me wanting to enter another competition, and I’ve loads of ideas up my sleeve.”
